Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Applicants should be qualified to teach beginning and intermediate Spanish language and culture courses using communicative/proficiency-based approaches, as well as global issues courses. Applicants should be qualified to oversee and manage our lower-level Spanish language program. The lower-level language program coordinator will be responsible for scheduling classes; training, supervising, and supporting language instructors; designing and updating language curricula; and evaluating the lower-level language program to meet the needs of our diverse community. This role requires strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for promoting language learning and cultural understanding. The standard teaching load is 8 courses per academic year (typically 4/4), although this load may be modified by the Chair pursuant to significant service assignments. In addition to teaching and service, the faculty member will contribute to the growth of the Department of Modern Languages through participation in departmental activities, collaboration with university and community partners, recruitment, and other service.

Required Qualifications

M.A. or Ph.D. in Spanish and/or related field, e.g. second language acquisition, language pedagogy, linguistics, etc. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English is required. Experience in teaching Spanish at the college level is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Secondary emphasis in Hispanic Literature and Culture or Global Studies strongly desired. Expertise/Training in Community Translation and Interpreting a plus.

The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to prepare students for success in a global and interconnected world through the study of language and culture. Central to that mission is respecting different cultures and deliberately employing effective intercultural skills in communication. The Department's languages of instruction include not only Spanish, French, and German, but also the less-commonly taught, critical languages of Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Russian. The most recent language offering in the Department of Modern Languages is American Sign Language, which was added in 2016. Pedagogically too, in the past three decades, the Department has led with the creation of curricula designed specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish, the development of the Spanish Writing and Translation Community Center, the organization of comprehensive tutoring across all of our language offerings, and the development of the Language Acquisition Center to make our curricula among the most Internet- and media-rich learning experiences on campus. Alongside our BA degrees in French Global Studies, Spanish for Global Competence, and Spanish Translation and Interpreting, we have developed a BA in Critical Languages and International Studies (Chinese, German, Korean, Russian), as well as a BA in Modern Languages-Localization and Translation studies and multiple other degree opportunities.
