  • The Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education Department within the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia is searching for a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track). The successful candidate will work within the STORMED (Supporting Teachers through cOaching, obseRvations, and Multimedia to Educate students with Disabilities) Lab ( ~~~ ). The primary work will include management of OSEP-funded grants related to implementation of multimedia professional development for teachers of students with disabilities.

    The successful candidate will undertake a program of scholarly activities related to the mission of the STORMED Lab and broader CISE department. This includes conducting quantitative and mixed methods research studies, writing grant proposals, publishing results of studies and presenting findings at peer-reviewed conferences, and making other scholarly disseminations of findings to the field. The successful candidate will liaise between university-based staff, school personnel, and external evaluation team, help ensure the goals and objectives of the projects are met on time and within budget, recruit participants, create and revise curriculum materials, observe teachers and provide coaching, participate in scholarly activities (e.g., authoring manuscripts and conference presentations), administer teacher and student assessments, conduct focus groups and interviews, and complete other tasks as assigned.

    The selected scholar will also contribute to the continued iterative development of the COACHED (Capturing Observations and Collaboratively sHaring Educational Data) web app ( ~~~ ). There is a specific need to add content to COACHED to address the needs of students with extensive support needs and their education team's needs. The successful candidate will liaise between STORMED team members, school personnel, external evaluators, OSEP project officers, and other stakeholders related to funded projects.

    The Research Assistant Professor demonstrates a preliminary, but growing record of scholarly activities. This includes peer-reviewed publications, scholarly presentations and other disseminations of research, and establishment of a national reputation. The Research Assistant Professor may have a preliminary record of funded grant activity.

    Required Qualifications

    • PhD or EdD in Education or Special Educationor closely related field by the start date of the appointment

    Preferred Qualifications

    • At least three years of experience in conducting SPED research in an academic setting

    • Knowledge of multimedia technologies to support learning for students with disabilities, particularly low-incidence disabilities (students with extensive support needs).

    • Teaching or research experiences focused on students/individuals with low-incidence disabilities.

    • Experience designing and delivering high quality professional development to teachers.

    Employment in this role is contingent upon the continued availability of funding.
