  • The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for multiple endowed professorships in data science at the rank of tenured associate professor or full professor. These Quantitative Foundation Distinguished Professorships are made possible by a generous gift from the Quantitative Foundation to establish the School of Data Science.

    Candidates for endowed faculty positions (Associate and Full Professor with tenure) must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and advising, in data science and/or closely related fields, and must have established a national/international reputation for contribution to the field in methodology, application, and impact.

    Ideal candidates for these endowed Professors in Data Science will have demonstrated internationally recognized achievement in data science and made fundamental contributions to the discipline. Quantitative Foundation Professors will provide leadership to the School of Data Science and help its faculty and their reputation grow. Enthusiasm for the development and education of a new generation of data scientists across a variety of skill levels is highly desirable. Quantitative Foundation Professors will foster a scholarly environment for novel methods, pioneering techniques, and impactful applications in data science to help establish the University, and the school, as an internationally recognized leader in data science.

    The School of Data Science at UVA was established in 2019 with the largest private gift in the institution's 200-year history. Faculty will have the opportunity to help shape the culture of a new school, develop modern pedagogy, and grow the discipline of data science in national and international forums. Faculty duties include research, teaching (in-person and online), mentoring, advising students, and service to the university and the discipline.

    Candidates with backgrounds and experiences that are underrepresented in data science are especially encouraged to apply. A commitment to advancing the University's mission is essential for all candidates ( ~~~ ).

    Candidates must have earned a PhD in Data Science or a related field (e.g., STEM, social science or humanities degree with a Data Science focus). Appointments are made in the School of Data Science with the potential for joint or courtesy appointments in other schools as applicable.

    Rank will be commensurate with academic and industry experience. Appointments will be available on 9-month contracts.

    • A teaching statement that describes your teaching and mentoring experiences, and how they align with the UVA's mission statement ( ~~~ ). This statement should focus on your past or planned educational activities and how you see data science education evolving over the next decade (1-3 pages).

    • A scholarly pursuits statement that describes your data science expertise, educational scholarship (if any), engagement in traditional research activities (if any), and future scholarly goals (1-2 pages).

    • If available, reviews & course evaluations from up to 3 educational courses, seminars, and/or short courses.
