  • What You Will Do

    The Plasma Theory and Application Group (XCP-6) applies theoretical and computational plasma physics to simulate Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), including System Generated Electromagnetic Pulse (SGEMP) events using advanced computer codes. Areas of particular interest include: workflow optimization; integration of new Monte Carlo codes into existing workflows; verification and analysis of codes in development. The successful candidate will work alongside mentors to facilitate changes to the existing SGEMP modeling as well as participate in LDRD research related to other EMP physics.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

    • Demonstrated experience in setup, execution and postprocessing physics codes for science or engineering applications.

    • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

    Education/Experience:

    • BS in physics, engineering, astrophysics, applied mathematics or a closely related field.

    • Eligibility is limited to students that have completed a bachelor's degree within the past 3 years.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience in Python, bash, and tcsh scripting.

    • Experience in Monte Carlo and/or Particle-in-Cell computing.

    • Experience running large, parallel codes in a high-performance, Unix computing environment.

    • Experience in fielding and analysis of experimental data.

    • Experience in electromagnetic pulse (EMP) modeling.

    • Record of achievement in any of the following: MHD, plasma physics (theory, simulation, code development), plasma transport and turbulence, or kinetic plasma effects.

    • Active Q clearance

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) .     Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
