    Essential functions (job duties):

    The Department of Chemistry is seeking applications for a full-time Pathway to Faculty Fellow committed to inclusion and equity of outcomes in the chemical sciences to join the research team of Professor Mary Kay Pflum in the expansive field of Chemical Biology. Research in the Pflum Group integrates organic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and proteomics to understand the molecular basis of human diseases, including cancer and sickle cell disease. The Fellow would receive career mentorship from Professor Pflum and a dedicated brain trust team of mentors. Working with these mentors, the Fellow will identify research and professional development opportunities that best match their interests. The Pflum lab is housed in the A. Paul Schaap Chemistry building, a state-of-the-art research building.

    JOB PURPOSE: This position is one of several under the Wayne State University Pathway to Faculty Program, which is grounded in Restorative Inclusive Excellence, an organizational management approach that seeks to mitigate harm through restorative justice practices, promote equity-mindedness focused on outcomes, and the use of inclusive excellence to disrupt structural and institution barriers to success. Components of the program include structured mentoring, resources for the establishment of an independent research program, and the support of a community committed to and experienced in the eradication of injustices in higher education. The Pathway to Faculty Program offers up to three years of pre-faculty support (research funds, infrastructure, mentorship, and teaching experience) to facilitate the development of a sustainable research program (~~~). Subject to attainment of expected milestones, the Fellow will transition to the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Wayne State University.

    A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required.

    (EDUCATION: We seek candidates who have developed insight into the challenges faced by historically marginalized groups in their path towards a career in scientific research and education. Long-term scholarly interests in topics that will impact underserved populations are highly desirable.

    (EXPERIENCE: Applicants should include: 1) a curriculum vitae; 2) a summary of research interests (3 pages or less); 3) a personal statement describing what equity-mindedness and inclusive excellence mean to the applicant as a researcher and future educator (1-2 pages); and 4) names and contact information for three people who can provide letters of reference on request. While letters of recommendation will not be solicited for the initial evaluation of candidates, applicants should ensure that letters will be submitted promptly upon request.
