  • Overview

    The Ophthalmic Educator is a key partner in the growth and development of all ophthalmic staff including clinical and support staff, residents, rotating medical students, and patients. Participates In the development of training initiatives and educational strategies for operational efficiency.

    Responsibilities

    • Work with the management team to establish training initiatives and educational strategies for enhancement of operational efficiency, staff performance and satisfaction, and quality of patient care.

    • Instruct and mentor allied health personnel, medical students, residents, and support staff in all applicable job skills.

    • Develop curricula and oversee the annual assistant training program. Prepare training materials including handouts, lectures, quizzes, reviews, exams, and performance assessments.

    • Create opportunities for all staff to learn and teach (including lectures, posters, publications).

    • Assist with the basic training of ophthalmology residents.

    • Identify new trends, equipment and instrumentation, techniques, and technology and be able to speak to the selection and acquisition of new equipment and practices within the scope of an allied health technician.

    • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree or higher.

    • At least 5 years of experience in an ophthalmology setting; management and/or

    • adult teaching experience preferred.

    • A leader with strong teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    • An experienced teacher, able to apply adult learning methods, develop learning plans, and follow through with assessments and continuing education.

    • Flexible, pro-active, and open-minded, with a high level of professional integrity.

    • A team player.

    • Have excellent written and oral skills, working ability with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher)

    • Demonstrates experience supporting hospital and clinic values, procedures and processes, and high-level customer service standards.

    • Must be a documented Certified Ophthalmic Technician with a minimum of 3 years of experience

    • Technical skills as expected from a COMT including (but not limited to) comprehensive patient intake, refractive skills, advanced diagnostic testing and imaging and procedural assistance.

    Required Licensure/Certifications

    • Certified Ophthalmic Technician by JCAHPO; additional relevant certifications helpful but not required.
