• Open rank tenured or tenure-track faculty in Materials Science and Engineering

    University of VirginiaCharlottesville, VA 22905

    Job #2673362194

  • The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia solicits outstanding applicants for a tenure track faculty position at any rank with a research focus on materials behavior in harsh environments. Harsh environments are broadly defined and can include, but are not limited to, high temperature conditions, chemically aggressive environments, or high levels of ionizing radiation. The research can be focused on any materials class(es), functionalities, or technology platforms which demand that materials operate in such environments. The research could utilize these environments as motivation for materials development to improve sustainability.

The successful applicant will develop an internationally recognized research program, engage enthusiastically and effectively in undergraduate and graduate teaching, and perform service in support of outreach and academic self-governance. Opportunities exist to (i) develop independent research, (ii) explore interdisciplinary collaborations with existing faculty, and (iii) initiate new research initiatives. Candidates who specialize in experimental, computational, theoretical or combinations of approaches are sought. We are especially interested in candidates who seek to address the materials behavior in these environments through a materials science approach, understanding the equilibrium and kinetics processes that govern the structure/processing/property/performance paradigm for materials performance in harsh environments.

The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in materials science and engineering and will demonstrate the desire to develop a world-class, sponsored-research program centered on development of successful MS and PhD students. The successful candidate will enhance departmental strengths through research collaborations, while also contributing broadly across disciplines in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the University at large. We seek a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in either materials science and engineering or a closely related field.
