  • We are seeking a Master Homewood Teaching Fellow - EEI . Explore Engineering Innovation is based on an introductory engineering course taught to undeclared freshmen engineering students at JHU. EEI covers a range of fundamental engineering topics including materials science, computer science, civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering. The course includes lectures but focuses on hands-on lab experiments and group data analysis. Graded coursework includes lab reports, homework assignments, a group presentation, and a design project. Students can earn three credits from Johns Hopkins University. Ultimately, the goal of the course is to expose students to engineering principles, allow them to apply the math and science they learn in high school to solving real world problems, and to help students develop critical thinking skills.

    Candidates should have served as a Teaching Fellow for one of our Engineering Innovation locations. This role will support all ten sections of Explore Engineering Innovation that operate on the JHU Homewood campus.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    • The Master Teaching Fellow must be present and available during the entire course.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow must be prepared to spend time independently to review course materials and complete the online training program prior to the first day of the course.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow must be comfortable with the course material and be able to relate the curriculum to high school students.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow must work with the Homewood Instructors and Teaching Fellows to develop a sense of community for the high school students participating in the class.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow must be available for supplementary instruction outside of class hours.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will directly manage and supervise the Teaching Assistants on the Homewood campus to ensure that lab equipment is prepared and ready for each day's activities.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will ensure that each Homewood Section has the printed materials that they require each day.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will fill-in for Homewood instructional team members if needed.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will assist in coordinating the Career Connections Day at Homewood.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will assist in coordinating the Spaghetti Bridge Ceremony at Homewood.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will greet, introduce, and assist the lecturer for special lectures and administer the surveys at the end of each session.

    • The Master Teaching Fellow will visit each of the ten Homewood sections of Explore Engineering Innovation at least twice a week.

    Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Excellent classroom management skills.

    • Knowledge of Algebra II and Trigonometry.

    Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

    • Familiarity with Canvas or similar LMS.

    • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.

    • Proficient with Zoom or similar video conferencing software.

    Physical Requirements

    • Access to remote/virtual work environment for training prior to course.

    • Physical presence required during the course.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a science, technology, engineering or math discipline.

    • 3+ years of experience as a high school teacher in a STEM discipline.

    • Availability to teach July 1 to July 26, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    • ***Availability to participate in preparatory activities prior to the first day of class and some clean-up activities after the class ends. pre-course training **

    • Candidates for these positions will be subject to a pre-employment background check and fingerprinted per policies related to working with minors.

    • All employees participating in Hopkins Pre-College programs must enroll and participate in mandatory online training relevant to working with minors and working at JHU.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering.
