    Summary

    The Film Studies Program in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) seeks a half-time Instructor of Film Studies to commence in the Fall 2024 semester. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching in-person introductory and core courses in Film Studies (i.e. courses focused on film history, the critical analysis of cinema & media, film theory, national cinemas, genre/auteur studies). The integration of theory and practice in film studies as it applies to the broader interdisciplinary arts world is a central ethos of the VAPA department and is a focus of this position. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach in-person on campus and contribute to the continued growth and development of Film Studies curriculum.     Essential Functions

    • Teach a range of classes including Introduction to Film Studies to advanced topic courses in the candidate's area of specialization.

    • Work with the Director of Film Studies in the continued development of the program.

    • Develop film and media courses that elevate underrepresented perspectives in the classroom, addressing the cultures and experiences of people of color in the United States especially through intersectional approaches to gender, race, ethnicity, ability, and class

    • Collaborate with faculty to develop inclusive curriculum and coordinate/expand interdisciplinary collaborations and screening events with other VAPA programs and other departments on campus. Participate in service

    • Teach entry-level required courses such as Introduction to Film Studies and Narrative Cinema, in rotation with current faculty.

    • Propose and teach new film courses. An emphasis on global, post-colonial and/or film and filmmaking in and by underrepresented groups is desired.

    • Actively develop ideas to integrate inclusive pedagogy across the arts.

    Cross-Campus Collaborations

    • Potential for collaborations with the other programs within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, the Heller Center for the Humanities, and other departments within the College of Letters Arts and Sciences.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    • Education: An M.A. or M.F.A in Film Studies or a closely related field.

    • Experience: 2 years full-time experience (or equivalent) teaching film at the post-secondary level.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated commitment to teaching an inclusive curriculum to a diverse student population that foregrounds intersections among race, ability, class, and gender identities

    • Evidence of familiarity with critical trends and inclusive pedagogical practices in the areas of film, screen, and media history and theory (including forms of post-digital culture/emergent media technologies)

    • Proven ability to teach both entry-level film courses and advanced topics in film studies.

    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move. Employee is occasionally

    required to have long periods of sitting, moderate bending, moderate energy requirements and fine motor

    skills. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
