  • What You Will Do:

    The ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES SECURITY group (EES-16) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division (~~~) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an opening for a creative and resourceful post MS student with background in hydrogeology, subsurface flow and transport modeling, mechanical engineering, physics, or applied math . The successful candidate will apply and develop tools to aid in data assimilation for a large CO2 sequestration project in Wyoming. Additional opportunities may include groundwater flow and transport modeling to support experiments related to radioactive waste disposition. Data collection and analysis will require collaboration with both University and Industry partners, and will be influenced by requirements laid out by the EPA in their oversight role for Class VI CO2 injection wells.

    The successful applicant will participate in creating and presenting research at technical conferences and program meetings and in the development of internal technical reports and manuscripts for submission to high-impact journals.

    The starting date for the initial appointment is June 2024. Post MS positions are for one year with the ability to renew for a second year. Options for continuing work with the laboratory can be pursued after the initial appointment, but is not guaranteed and depends on future funding situations in addition to candidate performance.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Strong organizational skills to synthesize data from multiple sources.

    • Excellent communication, writing and oral presentation skills.

    • Have a theoretical understanding of processes related to gas flow and transport in fractured rock and porous media.

    • Fluency in one or more programming languages such as Python, C++ or FORTRAN.

    • Demonstrated ability to work creatively and independently in collaboration with large interdisciplinary and diverse research teams.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience visualizing model output with Para View, Visit, or other dynamic visualization software.

    • Experience with Linux operating systems.

    • Experience in application of numerical models of fluid flow and transport in fractured rock and porous media.

    • Experience with machine learning methods.

    • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) .     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
