Health Sciences Services (HSS) consists of an administrative team and unit structure that provides centralized resources and support to advance the vision, core values, and culture of the University of Washington.

HSS supports aspects of all six health sciences schools - Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work. Support includes affiliation agreements, the Board of Health Sciences Deans, the Health Sciences Building, and instructional and administrative support.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Skills and Assessment Manager .

The Clinical Skills and Assessment (CSA) Manager is responsible for the operation and development of the University of Washington Health Sciences Standardized Participant/Patient Program and the University of Washington School of Medicine Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Program. These programs include numerous instructional, formative and summative assessment activities and research. The CSA Manager promotes and collaborates with all the schools in Health Sciences to support simulation-based learning experiences and competency-based assessments learning throughout the Health Sciences.

Additionally, the CSA Manager is responsible for oversight of the clinical teaching labs (CTL), where Health Sciences students are trained and tested on their clinical skills utilizing standardized patients (SPs) and other experiential clinical teaching methodologies. The CTL has four examination rooms, a large teaching/demonstration examination classroom, and is equipped with computers, simulation equipment and clinical teaching materials.

This position requires the individual to collaborate with faculty from multiple health sciences disciplines, to design, deliver and support course and simulation based activities and assessments across a broad range of health professional disciplines. The CSA Manager participates in the design and delivery of curricula across multiple programs and disciplines and serves as a resource to faculty in the development and utilization of experiential learning methodologies, simulation, and innovative learning technologies. This position requires the ability to use sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential situations.

The Clinical Skills program was designed and established in 1989 to foster cooperation and resource-sharing between all schools in the Health Sciences as it relates to clinical and psycho-motor skills instruction. The program provides Standardized Participants/Patients, skill-based laboratory set-ups, clinical teaching supplies and equipment, and instructional assistance for faculty. The CSA Manager provides module design assistance, order supplies, provides equipment, coordination of formative and summative assessments (OSCEs), and when requested, hire specialized instructors.

Standardized Patients (SPs) are individuals specifically trained to present scripted health history, to simulate the physical symptoms, and to portray the emotions of the original patient upon whom their case was based. SPs are also trained to give students immediate, one-to-one feedback on their performance. The Objective Structured Clinical Examinations and Competency Based Assessments (OSCEs) are a significant part of the Health Sciences curriculum. Students are required to perform satisfactorily on these exams before advancing to the next level of instruction, and high-stakes performance exams like the OSCE are considered during school accreditation. Currently OSCEs are provided at multiple clinical teaching sites around the WWAMI region and will require some travel for SPs.
