  • The Johns Hopkins University Welch Medical Library seeks to hire an Associate Director of Informationist Services. This position is a member of the library's senior management team and is responsible for conceiving, planning, directing, and evaluating information services to faculty, staff, clinicians, fellows, residents, and students in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Health System including its hospitals (Johns Hopkins Medicine/JHM), the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH), and the School of Nursing (SON). The position requires working in a complex, fast-paced, and distributed information delivery environment. The successful applicant will collaborate with the senior leadership group and colleagues across the Welch team in the overall development of information services. The goal of the department is to define and grow existing embedded library services while developing innovative information solutions to emerging opportunities in evidence synthesis, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, research metrics, and knowledge dissemination to serve the faculty, staff, and students of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and School of Nursing. The information services of the department focus particularly on identifying and meeting needs for health information resources and services through performing needs assessments, identifying and addressing barriers to access, and the creation of strategic information partnerships across the Welch Medical Library and our large user community. Critical to success is collaboration across the Welch team and with the library's senior management team. As a key member of this team, the Associate Director of Informationist Services shares responsibility for determining the future course of the Welch Library, including both strategic and operational planning. This position reports to the Associate Dean of the Welch Medical Library.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Informationist Services

    • Directs the planning, development, and evaluation of informationist services for the faculty, staff, and students of JHM, BSPH, and SON.

    • Reviews, envisions, and assesses departmental structure and distribution of responsibilities.

    • Evaluates the performance of the twelve members of the Informationist Services Department in the execution of their information service responsibilities.

    • Informationist responsibilities include establishing a regular, identifiable service presence with an emphasis on collaborative information partnerships with faculty, students, and staff in their assigned public health, clinical, and/or basic science departments to support the research and data life cycle.

    • Assessing the information resource and service needs of assigned departments; developing or coordinating interventions to meet those needs; and evaluating the effectiveness of those programs.

    • Directs engagement of the team in the curricula of the health sciences schools, residency programs, and other education programs.

    • Leads engagement of the informationist team in evidence synthesis and other research projects with faculty, students, and others across JHM, BSPH, and SON.

    • Collaborates with Welch team and across Johns Hopkins Hospital Libraries on assessing information and data resources and research tool needs, and promotion of acquired resources to user community.

    • Ensures communication of advances in health sciences librarianship developed through the informationist services program with the wider library and information service community.

    • Establishes informationist service priorities in accordance with the library's overall strategic plan.

    Library Wide Planning and Leadership

    • Facilitates as a member of the senior management group led by the Associate Dean, which sets the course for the library's future through strategic and operational planning and professional development activities.

    • Serves as needed on committees both internal and external to the Welch Library, including committees and task forces in the JH Libraries and the health science schools and JH Health System.

    • Works closely with the Associate Dean and senior library leadership to recommend, develop, and implement new policies and procedures for overall library operations.

    • Maintains awareness of new Welch and cross JH Libraries developments, fosters understanding and support of Library programs.

    • Promotes communication among Library units and throughout the medical campus.

    • Maintains awareness of advances in health sciences librarianship and their local applications.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or equivalent.

    • Five years professional and progressively responsible library management experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Second advanced degree in public health, life sciences, informatics, or related degrees.

    • Seven years of experience in management and administration of library and information programs.

    • Advanced writing and editing.

    • Comfortable assessing service needs, implementing service enhancements and changes, and leading organizational changes.

    • Experience in the application of information technology, knowledge management, or communication tools to solve problems and meet identified information needs.

    • Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others.

    • Demonstrated ability to cost-effectively assess needs, identify solutions, and see opportunities for delivering information in complex research, educational, or clinical environment.

    • Commitment to a professional community through professional association membership, publications, presentations, and/or professional leadership positions.

    Classified Title: Library Services Manager

    Role/Level/Range: L/04/LD

    Starting Salary Range: Min $75,000 - Max $131,300 Annually ($100,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

    Employee group: Full Time

    Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
