    About the Position:

    Reporting to the University Librarian, the Assistant University Librarian (AUL) for External Relations will oversee and implement the strategy for effective external community engagement for Stanford Libraries and advise on programs focused on effective engagement within Stanford.

    Core Duties:*

    The AUL for External Relations is a member of the Libraries Executive Group, the senior leadership team, and will amplify the institutional vision through leadership, with an emphasis on measurable fundraising/communication goals, and engagement of key library stakeholders. The successful candidate will lead based on a sense of core ethics of collaboration and the drive for excellence.

    The AUL for External Relations will facilitate a culture of collaboration between development, communications, outreach and other units, schools and departments within the libraries and across campus, and develop a deep understanding of Stanford Libraries' programs and outcomes. This role will be a passionate, visible, and informed advocate for Stanford Libraries and engage with the broader community while positioning the Libraries for improved fundraising and visibility.

    • Develops External Relations plans, programs, and assessments for the Stanford Libraries, including LOCKSS, describing and promoting the services, staff, and collections of the University Libraries, LOCKSS, and other units or enterprises reporting to the University Librarian, in connection with the leadership and management staff of the individual units of the Stanford Libraries, coordinating as needed with other Stanford University units;

    • Implements approved communications plans with staff in the Stanford Libraries External Relations Office and with others in the Stanford Libraries' staff; coordinates social media and networking programs undertaken as part of the strategic external relations program of Stanford Libraries.

    • Develops strategies and tactics for fundraising and donor development for the approval of the University Librarian (donations to Stanford Libraries may take the form of items for Stanford's collections, technology for support systems, funds for endowments, research and operational projects, as well as expendable funds); assets may come from individual and family donors, corporate donors, government agencies, and private foundations, all of whom/which will be key contacts for the AUL; in developing fundraising plans, the strategies and their resulting tactics are guided by Stanford regulations and larger fund raising programs, including the Office of Sponsored Research and the Office of Development;

    • Implements resource acquisition plans and tactics in coordination with others in Stanford Libraries utilizing staff in the SUL Office of External Relations as appropriate, members of the Libraries Executive Group, members of the Asilomar Group (middle management group); maintaining direct and on-going involvement with individual donors and foundations.

    • Represents Stanford Libraries to the press, often acting as spokesperson for the Stanford Libraries and particularly for the University Librarian.

    • Serves as a member of the Libraries Executive Group of Stanford Libraries, offering advice and counsel on the full range of issues coordinating the programs of the Office of External Relations on an on-going basis, often working with individual members of the LEG as well as actively participating in weekly meetings of the senior leadership team.

    • Writes under his/her own name and in the name of the University Librarian on issues arising for public and private consumption.

    • Oversees, directs, and coordinates the work of the four professional staff and the occasional casual staff or contract professionals working for the Office of External Relations, including devising, organizing, and operating various donor and public events.

    • Cultivates and communicates regularly with key donors and donors prospects;

    • Oversees and participates in the development of formal and informal publications to Stanford Libraries' staff, the Stanford campus, the donor community, and friends of the Stanford Libraries; communications may include web publications as well as annual reports, among others.

    • Participates as Stanford's representative to the External Relations working group of the Ivy Plus Confederation and similar professional groups in the broad library global community.

    • As a member of the LEG, performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education & Experience:

    • Undergraduate degree in relevant subject required; master's degree in information science or library science OR the equivalent in experience required, with an additional master's degree or PhD desired;

    • Demonstrated success in a research library or other not-for-profit organization usually associated with five or more years; For consideration at the Library Manager 2 level experience usually associated with7 or more years.

    • Experience and/or education in effective communication tactics and strategy; experience in strategic communications program development; excellent command of written and spoken English.

    • Experience and/or education in effective marketing tactics and strategy; experience in strategic marketing program development.

    • Experience in building deep, productive relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the Libraries' organization.

    • Demonstrated success in communication of and advocating for a research library's or similar not for profit organizations' needs and aspirations.

    • Successful management of staff in an external relations unit in one or more research libraries or relevant not-for-profit organizations.

    • Strong work ethic.

    • Willingness to travel domestically and possibly internationally.

    • Successful experience raising money and other assets, communicating and socializing with donors and cultivating prospective donors.

    • Knowledge of presentation applications.

    • Willingness and ability to represent SUL effectively and the University.

    • Demonstrated success in coordination of effort with other teams in a larger organization.

    • Demonstrated success in innovation and perception of possible innovations in external relations to adopt/adapt.

    • Successful experience dealing with media organizations and representatives thereof.

    • Experience managing events similar to small and medium size conferences, friends of the Library (or similar not-for-profit organization) events; book launches or similar celebrations, exhibit openings, staff recognition events and staff social events.

    • Willingness and ability to travel domestically in pursuit of objectives.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    The successful candidate will have experience leading a unit that relies on strong collaboration and coordination across multiple teams in one or more institutions similar to the Stanford Libraries usually associated with 5 or more years of experience ; For consideration at the Library Manager 2 level experience usually associated with 7 or more years and has:

    • a demonstrated ability to enhance community engagement and strengthen the visibility, purpose, and case for support for a constantly evolving organization;

    • experience as a successful fundraiser with a track record of acquiring major gifts and inspiring fundraising partners.

    • a creative storytelling capacity that understands that the audience is everything, crafting strategies individual presentations for particular audiences and leveraging challenges/platforms to tell compelling stories/proposals of impact;

    • an ability to synthesize complex information into a clear compelling narrative that speak to donors;

    • a demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, building public support, strengthening infrastructure, and inspiring staff;

    • excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills;

    • knowledge of social media trends and platforms with an ability to drive forward a strategy that resonates effectively with designated audiences; a practice of maintaining this knowledge as channels and media evolve.

    • demonstrated adaptability and pivoting quickly to meet ever changing needs of the Libraries.

    • a deep understanding of the value of racial equity as an organizational operating principle and is committed to continued learning on issues related to race, equity, diversity, and belonging;

    Physical Requirements:

    • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

    • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

    • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

    • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.

    • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

    The expected pay range for this position is $146,000 to $187,000 per annum for Library Manager 1. The expected pay range for Library Manager 2 is $179,000 to $200,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
