Assistant Professor of Physics, General Faculty

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia (UVa), College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor, General Faculty. The Department has a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning of Physics and the successful candidate will be expected to strengthen that commitment. The successful candidate will be ready to employ active learning methods in teaching introductory physics courses, such as collaborative problem solving, flipped classroom, game-based learning, to give a few examples. We particularly welcome applicants with interests and experience in modern pedagogy methods which emphasize student participation.

This is a three- year, tenure-ineligible appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance, and need for the position. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester, typically with only one or two distinct course preparations. Other duties include student advising, curriculum development, and other departmental and university service. Professional activity that enhances teaching is strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will also be prepared to work with a diverse student population. Annual reviews will be based primarily on teaching and service. This position includes the possibility of promotion to Associate and Full Professor, General Faculty. The salary is market-competitive, and optional summer teaching for additional compensation is usually available. The appointment will begin in the Fall term of 2024.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, or Physics Education, or a related field, by the appointment start date and have a documented record of teaching introductory physics courses at college level.
