Alternatives for Teachers

If you are a teacher, but find yourself unemployed at this time, there are other related jobs you can do while seeking a full time position in the teaching field again. Here are some ideas on how to keep your teaching skills warm and stay working during the rough times.

Tutoring: Many people and groups use tutors, and often it is as easy as placing an ad offering your services at a reasonable price. Look in your area for tutoring assistant companies, or groups like Sylvan and local SAT prep services. Offering your skills in this manner will help you continue teaching and keep some income coming in on the side.

Online Teaching: Many schools offer online courses these days, and you may be able to become a part-time or full-time online teacher rather quickly, depending on your specialty. The nice thing about being an online educator, is that it often does not matter where you are located; you can probably find a position anywhere in the world and teach remotely from the comfort of your home.

Homeschool: If you look into the local homeschool community, there are usually many co-op type groups that work together in a similar capacity to a private type school setting, to provide educational services and the arts in a community type setting. Groups like these are always looking for teachers to assist in teaching various subject matters in a smaller "classroom" setting.

Specialty Work: Have you considered working in a related field that is not directly teaching? For instance, if you are a foreign language teacher, you might consider using your skill as a translator within an organization. If you are an art teacher, see about local community art needs that you could assist with. In other words, look outside of the typical classroom, and see if your specialty might allow you an opportunity to work in a related field outside of the classroom.

These are just some general ideas to spark your creative juices in finding alternative work, in either a part-time or full-time basis. There are plenty of other examples you could possibly think of, and if you are sitting there thinking of one right now, please share in the comment section below. It may help others like you to open new doors.
