A successful job interview doesn't have to be nerve-racking. If you prepare properly and are yourself, you can win the day thanks to your professional regimen and personal brand. Getting the basic requirements of an interview right can put you ahead of other candidates, so take a look at these 10 facets of an interview that you need to nail down in order to succeed.

1. Multiple Copies of Documents

Bring at least three to five copies of your resume, references and photos with you to the job interview. That's because you may have multiple interviewers who don't have copies of your documents. It's also because you might run into other opportunities while heading to the interview. Plus, having your credentials on hand reduces any delays during the interview.

2. Plenty of Research

Research the company ahead of the job interview, including the company culture, competitors, market research and industry news. You want to come across as a problem solver, and research gives you a chance to submit a plan for your first 90 days of work to hit the ground running.

3. Proper Attire

Dress appropriately for the company culture. If employees wear polo shirts and khakis to their jobs, a shirt and tie are ideal. Always dress one step above the company's dress code for everyday wear when attending an interview.

4. Timeliness

Arrive on time, usually five to 10 minutes early, for the job interview. Never arrive late, because that could doom your chances and have your interview cancelled.

5. How You Help

Go into the interview with a clear picture of how you help the company in your role. This increases your value and puts you in a unique position ahead of other candidates by demonstrating how your skills pay dividends for the employer.

6. Past Achievements

Recall past achievements and accomplishments during a job interview, especially ones you did not list on your resume. Think about leadership, problem solving and communication skills beyond just the technical skills you noted on your credentials.

7. Knowledge of Your Resume

Knowing what you have on your resume is a key starting point for conversations in an interview. Knowing what you put on there shows you have the presence of mind and awareness of your greatest skills and abilities. Your answers to the questions people ask lead to more questions and a better conversation during an interview.

8. Presence of Mind

Be present during the interview and focus totally on what's in front of you. Don't be afraid to pause and think of an answer before responding, because it shows conscientiousness on your part.

9. References

Your references can verify your skill set. Perhaps you have a network contact who already works for the company, so that's one important reference you want to include. A mentor or someone high up in a company also serves as an important point of contact for verifying your skills.

10. Negotiation Skills

Negotiation is an important skill when it comes to salary. Research beforehand what you're worth, what salary you require and why you deserve the pay scale that you outline.

Know these basic requirements for a job interview to get ahead in the game. Even if you don't land a job, you make a great first impression for future opportunities.
