Whether you already have a full-time or part-time job or simply want to earn some extra money for holiday shopping, getting a holiday job is a great option. Holiday jobs allow you to test drive a new line of work, make new friends and build your list of job references. You might also learn some new job skills. Increase your chances of success when searching for a holiday job with these three tips.

1. Start Your Search Early

Don't wait until December to start your search for a holiday job. Most employers begin planning for the holidays around mid-to-late October and usually complete seasonal hiring before Thanksgiving in preparation for Black Friday. It's best to start doing your research on holiday jobs once the fall season begins. Find out which employers typically hire seasonal workers, and then contact the employers you're interested in to find out exactly when they plan to begin the hiring process.

2. Don't Be Too Picky

Holiday jobs tend to fill up quickly, as there are generally many people seeking to earn extra cash during the holiday season. Remember, you'll be competing with students who are out of school for winter break, individuals who work for the college and university system and people who are unemployed and looking for a way to make money that doesn't require extensive experience. Most seasonal jobs pay around the same wage and offer little or no benefits, so you might miss out on an opportunity to work if you pass up a job.

3. Sign Up With a Temp Agency

Many temporary employment agencies hire seasonal workers each holiday season. These agencies generally have contracts with organizations that need workers to help them keep up with the increased work demand. Temp agencies can connect you with companies that need customer service representatives, shipping department workers, live chat operators, retail workers, postal workers, holiday event decorators and countless other positions that would be difficult to find on your own. Network with colleagues and individuals within your community to find out which agencies offer the best positions and pay. Then, head over to the agency to apply for a holiday job. This is an especially good option for anyone who is unemployed, since doing a phenomenal job can lead to more assignments with the temp agency or a permanent position with the company.

Follow these three tips to gain an edge over your competitors and increase your chances of landing a temporary position during the holiday season. A great holiday job not only allows you to earn extra cash and pay off some holiday debt, but it also allows you to make connections with people who can ultimately help boost your career.
