No Budget for Extra Staff? Consider College Interns

Posted by

Times are tough. As an admin manager, you've already cut staff to the bone. Now you need more help, but you're reluctant to hire more regular full-time staff. The answer? college-age interns. You know they'll probably take less out of your budget, but there are other advantages to taking on an intern or two.

They add a fresh perspective. Interns often question old and sometimes outdated procedures. Their fresh approaches can help you work smarter and more efficiently. They'll dare to uncover problems and practices that often go unnoticed by full-time employees.

They're social media savvy. Interns know social media and are comfortable using it. They've literally grown up with it and know techniques and short cuts full time staff may not be aware of. The rise of social media marketing and mobile devices will be key to your business survival. Interns can help you develop a strategy to fully exploit this new medium.

They have boundless energy. In these tough times, full time staff are being taxed to the limit with multiple jobs and long hours, which can result in career burnout. Interns have a limited internship--6 months, a year--to get things done and prove themselves, so they'll work harder, longer. They'll go all out to impress you. They know a recommendation from you can be important to their upward mobility.

They learn fast. Interns fresh out of learning institutions have generally honed the art of absorbing lots of information quickly. They're also good at multi-tasking.
