Effective team leaders generally display a variety of personal and professional characteristics that naturally encourage others to follow them, such as confidence, integrity, decisiveness, optimism and trustworthiness. While all of these traits are important, it is also essential for team leaders to display qualities that help stimulate production in the workplace to propel the company forward. Here are some important strategies leaders should implement to keep the company on an upward trajectory.

Encourage Innovation

Team leaders must be innovative, and they must also encourage innovation in team members. As technology advances and competition in the marketplace increases, organizations must think of new and creative ways to compete. Innovation is what sets stagnant businesses apart from those that continuously grow and prosper, so this strategy is vital for businesses seeking longevity. Get your team members to think outside the box by encouraging them to share their creative ideas, even if you don't plan to implement those ideas right away.

Embrace Change

Change can be scary for most people as it typically involves some type of risk. However, change is also necessary for growth, which is why an effective team leader should always expect and embrace change. Taking risks can lead to failure, even when the risks are smart and calculated. However, risk-taking can also lead to very high degrees of success. Don't be afraid to develop new strategies, launch new brands or completely revamp a project; welcoming change also gives you and your team members the opportunity to expand your knowledge and learn new skills.

Be a Visionary

Strong team leaders are able to envision the success of a project before putting it into action. You must be able to come up with ideas that support the values, mission and goals of the company; communicate your vision to the team; and then assist the team with putting the ideas into action. Great leaders are able to translate their ideas in a way that makes sense to everyone involved, and promote enthusiasm among all participants. Team leaders are also available to support team members each step of the way, so make sure you're around to help your team carry out your vision.

Know Your Team

A good and strategic team leader knows how to delegate tasks in a way that leads to the best outcome for the entire team. Strong leaders know the strengths and weaknesses of each team member, and they recognize the importance of accepting these strengths and weaknesses. It's impossible to get the best out of your team if you don't know anything about its members; work together with team members on small projects or share specific responsibilities with them to gauge their work habits and ultimately use their talents in the most efficient way possible.

Effective, goal-oriented team leaders display attributes and implement important strategies that not only instill confidence in each team member, but also contribute to the growth of the organization. These team leaders challenge employees by setting attainable high standards and providing the essential training, support and tools for getting the job done.
