Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) is a very large and complex department with close to 300 faculty and numerous students and trainees situated on campus and across a wide spectrum of teaching hospitals and research institutes. As a key team member, the incumbent will be a highly motivated individual who enjoys the challenge of working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Administrative Manager, they will be actively involved in supporting the mandate, the academic mission, and the reputation of LMP as a world leader in laboratory medicine and pathobiology.

The incumbent will proactively engage with members of the department and liaise with communication experts within the Faculty of Medicine and University of Toronto at large. The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing appropriate communication strategies for various initiatives and programs within LMP, including the implementation of an on-line communication plan utilizing emerging technologies.

They will manage all aspects of the department's communication vehicles and branding including the responsibility for the redesign and redevelopment of all of LMP's communication materials (e.g. annual report, newsletters), the LMP website and promotional materials (e.g. information pamphlets, posters, event notices), building alumni engagement and advancement efforts. This includes overseeing brand management and the proper use of the department's visual identity; creating and developing marketing and communication materials; incorporating new and emerging media and web technologies; producing templates and guidelines; and building a library of digital artwork and photos for use by the department. The incumbent will have overall responsibility for renovating the department website including updating material and creating templates and guidelines for use in maintaining the site for the future.

In addition, the incumbent will work with the LMP Special Projects Coordinator and the graduate/postgraduate administrators to develop alumni and advancement engagement efforts which will be coordinated in conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) Advancement Office. They will assist in identifying students and faculty members to profile in publications and look for opportunities to build relationships with alumni by means of ongoing communication pieces. The incumbent will also undertake miscellaneous administrative duties and projects within the department as assigned.

(Minimum)

Education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience: Minimum three years related experience including composition and editing of material for publication (e.g. newsletters and annual reports) and graphic design both in print and electronic media, including web site design. Candidate must have demonstrated experience in designing and implementing communication strategies. Candidate must have demonstrated experience and/or understanding of brand management. Must have experience in project management and supervising support staff. Experience with University of Toronto policies and procedures is an asset.

Skills: High level of proficiency with a wide variety of software and on-line applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access); website design software such as CMS, HTML or HTML editors is an asset (i.e. Macromedia Dreamweaver); Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; Indesign or other desktop publishing software. Ability to deliver high-quality content across the broadest range of topics and in appropriate formats. Must demonstrate capacity for innovation, idea generation and strategic thinking. Able to interpret and apply guidelines and policies to a variety of situations in order to ensure compliance and provide direction. Highly organized with well developed project management and problem-solving skills including ability to work effectively with competing deadlines and priorities while successfully achieving project milestones. Strong initiative, highly resourceful, and excellent attention to detail. Superior communication skills (both verbal and written) with strong customer focus and demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels (management, physicians, faculty, students, vendors).
