Two-Quarter Visiting Instructor - Liberal Studies/History
About the Position:A split position in Liberal Studies and History as a two-quarter visiting Instructor of Islamic Studies, beginning on January 3, 2011.
About the Department:Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary humanities department with a focus on cultural history and the academic study of religion. The department offers two B.A. Humanities degree programs in History of Culture and Religion and Culture, and administers the minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies.
The History department divides historical studies into five areas: the United States, the Western Hemisphere (Canada and Latin America), Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and East and South Asia. Position Responsibilities:To teach three sections of a 5 credit introductory course on Humanities of Islamic Civilization in the Department of Liberal Studies. This course meets General University Requirements (GUR) and introduces students to the Arabic and Islamic Studies minor. Sample syllabus is available upon request. To teach two or three sections of 4 or 5 credit GUR and/or upper division courses related to the applicant's field, in the History Department. Required Qualifications: * ABD * Training in social or cultural history of an Islamic society * Ability to teach an introductory course on Islam and on variety in Islamic cultures * Ability to teach upper division courses in the candidate's field Preferred Qualifications: * Some classroom teaching experience * Ability to teach African history * Experience and skills in working with diverse students and staff Academic Emphasis:Liberal Studies / History Job Location:Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
