SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Quality Assurance function owns key responsibility for the overall quality of products delivered to Denver Public Schools customers and business areas through effective test procedures and test execution, as well as assistance with preventive controls and best practices. Product testing types include new custom development, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, upgrades, enhancements and fixes.

The SQA Analyst develops and executes test plans and procedures, assuring products delivered to production meet specified business requirements. Leverages previous experience and demonstrates good judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A high degree of perseverance and adaptability is required.

The SQA Analyst is expected to review test requirements, develop test plans and test cases, create test data and identify expected results to thoroughly test business requirements for enhancements or new products.

Individual must be a self-starter, possess good verbal and written communication skills, and work effectively with own and other teams within DoTS and across the District. Desired familiarity with a broad range of Quality Assurance concepts, practices, procedures and tools.


REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Evaluates and tests new or modified software applications to verify that programs function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines.

Defines and writes test plans, test scripts and test procedures that encompass the full range of needed software, system, and environment testing based on requirements.

Reviews new or modified programs, including documentation, diagrams, data schemas, and flow charts to determine if program will perform according to user request and conform to requirement guidelines.

May review operating logs to identify program processing errors.

Monitors and detects program and system performance errors and documents defect tracking.

Identifies differences between established standards and user applications and details and documents issues.

May participate as required in evaluation of proposed software or software enhancements for feasibility

May develop automated test scripts to test, track, and verify defects in software programs


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Detailed knowledge of Software Quality Assurance best practices, procedures, and tools

Understanding of software testing types and methods, which may include White, Black and Gray box testing; regression, negative, system, unit testing, etc.

Familiarity with automated test tools and tool suites (i.e. Mercury, MS Team Foundations, etc.)

Ability to execute database queries to validate field and table data using SQL, TOAD, or similar tools

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills.

Strong analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills

Self-starter, with ability to perform QA duties with little supervision

Detailed understanding of the software development lifecycle, including iterative approaches

Ability to work under deadline pressures and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other district employees.

LICENSES:

Certification or other formal training in Quality Assurance desirable.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree preferred with a minimum of 4-6 years in a software testing role, with demonstrated responsibility for complex test efforts.

Broad knowledge of computer systems and technical environments required. Familiarity with testing in Oracle and SQL environments, as well as experience working in .NET and/or JAVA environments helpful.

Competent in the use of PC tools including word processing, spreadsheet, and project management tools and software.

Experience working successfully with both technical personnel and non-technical customers and staff.

Experience designing and performing test activities within an iterative software development paradigm, in addition to more traditional waterfall project environments.

Experience designing, writing, and executing test cases based on functional specifications

Ability to execute database queries to validate field and table data using SQL, TOAD, or similar tools

Experienced in cross-functional relationship management and in working with development and other technical teams.

PERFORMANCE:

Demonstrated experience performing in compliance with established district and departmental policies regarding: attendance (absences, tardiness, sick leave and vacation use, and other scheduled or unscheduled absences); dress code; safety; security, and other policies, procedures and practices.

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Essential duties are routinely performed in a general office work environment and regularly require sitting at a work station/desk plus movement while completing paperwork or using computers, printers, calculators, copies, fax machines and other business office machines and equipment. Essential duties may involve: occasional kneeling, squatting, crouching, stooping, crawling, standing, bending, climbing (to stack, store or retrieve supplies or various office equipment), as directed. Compliance to security and safety procedures, including use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), is required.
