Unified Special Education Instructional Aide-Severely Handicapped YUCAIPA-CALIMESA JOINT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 12797 Third Street - Yucaipa, CA 92399 - (909) 797-0l74 To make a difference in the life of each child September 3, 2008 CLASSIFIED VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION TITLE: Special Education Instructional Aide-Severely Handicapped Yucaipa High School Offers of employment will be contingent upon the applicant's successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination, drug test, fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice, and TB test clearance. POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the principal, assists teachers with a wide variety of severely physically handicapped students; performs a wide variety of training duties involving immediate contact and close supervision of children; performs a variety of clerical duties of average difficulty; and performs related duties as required. WORK SCHEDULE: 5 ½ hours per day 182 days per year SALARY / BENEFITS Starting Salary Range 13: $12.86 - $14.35 per hour Full Salary Range 13:$12.86-$18.55 per hour, plus employee/district-paid major medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance for the employee and family and $25,000 life insurance for the employee only. SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be reviewed by a screening committee for satisfaction of minimum qualification standards. Those applicants evidencing the best qualifications will be tested. Those passing the test will be invited for a panel interview evaluation. All qualified unit members will be interviewed. The interview panel will provide the Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources with the top three candidates for final selection. All candidates will be notified in writing following final selection. Please note that all applications, testing and oral interviews must be completed at the prescribed times. Failure to meet these time requirements will cause disqualification for that position. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs general duties and plays a major role in assisting the teacher in caring for the physical needs of the children. 2. Performs activities such as lifting and moving children, some of whom are in wheelchairs and diapers and some of whom have reached adult size. 3. Helps the children at lunchtime and carries on a habit training program in etiquette, hygiene, manners and development of skill in using eating utensils. 4. Assists teachers and occasional resource specialists, such as speech specialists or physical therapists in helping children to become as independent as possible. 5. Assists children with toileting and cleaning after toilet accidents. 6. Assists in the preparation of teaching aids and devices. 7. Confers with teacher in planning and counseling relative to problems being experienced by individual children. 8. Performs such routine tasks as diaper changing, toileting, lifting children from one place to another and arranging furniture and supplies. 9. Feeds children in conjunction with teaching them to hold a cup, swallow, chew, tolerate various textures, identify foods, reach and grasp, and feed themselves. 10. Assists teachers in providing close attention to every child in the classroom. 11. Protects the safety of others in the group. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. College level training is desirable and incumbent employees are expected to avail themselves of specialized Adult School or college courses in this field, as prescribed by district policy. Experience: Prior paid job-related experience in successfully working with exceptional and regular children in a learning situation. Abilities / Skills / Knowledge: Knowledge of personal hygiene practices and procedures, and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand the needs of children and possess a genuine liking for children; communicate with children and motivate them to participate in learning activities; learn to teach in special subject matter areas or to teach children who have special learning needs by watching teachers or specialists; develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; supervise children in the classroom and out-of-doors; perform general clerical tasks and learn the operation of office equipment and devices; provide basic physical care to severely handicapped students.
