Turlock Unified School District Sp. Ed. Para-professional - Severe TURLOCK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Special Education Para-professional - Severe Range 10 DEFINITION: Under supervision of a certificated teacher, serve as an assistant to the teacher by aiding in the supervision and training of special education students; assist in the preparation and assembling of teaching materials and perform other related work as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides pre-academic/academic, behavioral and functional life skills instruction (i.e. implementing Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals/objectives) to severe special education students under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or support staff. 2. Provides individual and small group instruction, as appropriate; uses core and supplemental curriculum to support learning; collects data on student performance/behavior. 3. May implement Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs); may be required to intervene in behavioral situations requiring physical intervention, using a State-approved program (e.g. PART); may be required to utilize specific instructional strategies (e.g. discrete trial training, direction instruction, visual schedules, picture exchange communication systems); 4. Prepares for, assists with and clean-up after various classroom activities; assists teachers in the supervision of students in the classroom and on school grounds; assist in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; operate audio-visual equipment; grade papers, operate duplicating equipment, and maintains student records and files as directed by the teacher; attend to students physical needs in the classroom; may be required to assist in toileting, self help and special medical needs, using universal precautions; 5. Assists in maintaining inventory of books and teaching aids; may perform a variety of tasks for many teachers; order and distribute supplies as instructed; may assist with programs, equipment and materials to meet the needs of exceptional students; help individual students with specific problems. 6. Supervises bus, cafeteria and/or yard duty, and performs other related work as required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions: - Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 60 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. - This type of work will involve walking or standing for extended periods. - Stooping, squatting, kneeling, overhead reaching and repetitive bending may be involved frequently with this position. - Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment, and handle work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job. - Persons performing service in this position classification will be exposed to outdoor conditions including, but not limited to, extreme temperature; equipment and objects related to the position. - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: - Child growth and development. - English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Ability to: - Pass the competency test for para-professionals, or have completed at least 48 college semester units/possess an Associates degree or higher. - Assist with supervising the learning activities. - Work independently on own initiative. - Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. - Follow and implement behavior plan for special education students. - Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with special education students, parents, and staff. - Follow and implement behavior plan for special education students; ability to adhere to specific instructional strategies/schedules. Experience: - One year of prior experience as a para-professional or similar child related position; behavioral intervention training recommended. Education: - High school graduate or equivalent.
