Our services include research, training, educational materials, and strategy, with activities ranging from seed projects to large-scale national and international initiatives. ________________EDC is Committed to Diversity in the Workplace________________ The Teacher Quality in Science project in the Language, Literacy and Early Learning Unit, based in Waltham, MA, has an opening for a Research Assistant (II) in Manhattan and/or Westchester County, NY. The Language, Literacy and Early Learning Unit at Education Development Center, Inc. is seeking classroom observers to participate in a federally-funded early science grant to support preschool teachers in Manhattan and Westchester County, NY. These persons should have strong backgrounds in early childhood classrooms and understanding developmentally appropriate classroom practices. This position includes part-time opportunities in the winter and spring of 2012 (February – early June). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures. Responsibilities include: * Travel to preschool programs throughout either Manhattan or Westchester County, NY. Observers must provide their own transportation. (Observers are not required to work in both locations.) * Contact participating preschool teachers and schedule observation visits. * Attendance at a 3-day classroom observer training to be held in early February. This training will include instruction on a measure of fidelity to a science curriculum. Training is mandatory and will be paid hourly plus lunch. Observers must pass a reliability test at the conclusion of the training and will then observe classrooms using this measure from mid-February to mid-March. * Attendance at a 3-day observer training to be held in late March. This training will include instruction either on the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), or a newly developed early science classroom observation tool. Training is mandatory and will be paid hourly plus lunch. Observers must pass a reliability test at the conclusion of the training and will then observe classrooms using this measure from April through early June. * Ensuring that classroom observation scoresheets are complete and mailed back to study team. Prepaid envelopes will be provided. QUALIFICATIONS- This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills.
