Percent Time: 100% Type of Position Regular: A position which is considered essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. Persons appointed to this position will receive the privileges and benefits associated with regular employment status. Duties: This position has a start date of August 2, 2010. Design, plan and conduct courses in English as a Second Language. Design the course structure by selecting the materials to be used in the course and the subject matter to be taught in the course within the framework of the established ESL curriculum guidelines. Plan and teach three courses each session (two 16-week semesters and one 8-week summer session). Evaluate student work in the courses taught and assign grades. Attend meetings (staff, level, skill area and professional development). Mentor new instructional staff. Function as a master teacher for TESL practicum students. Carry out occasional administrative duties. Plan and implement extracurricular activities including a number of fieldtrips with students enrolled in the Iowa Intensive English Program. Must be able to drive vans or carry alls for these trips. Counsel students on academic matters and program policies. Help plan and conduct orientation programs at the beginning of each program session. Participate in Iowa Intensive English Program placement testing, proficiency testing for matriculated students, and international teaching assistant certification testing. Serve on program committees. Attend and present at regional and national professional conferences. Education Required: M.A. in Linguistics/TESL or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Experience Required: 6 months - 1 year (1 year preferred) of intensive English teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in computer software applications. Valid U.S. driver's license plus the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety program driving standards is required. Desirable Qualifications: 2 years intensive English teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Demonstrated program of professional development in the field of ESL. Fluency in English at the level of a native speaker. Online Application Options
