The Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers a unique postdoctoral opportunity to conduct research in the area of in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) of catalytic materials. The postdoctoral fellow will provide expertise in ETEM on nanoparticle catalysts. The research focus is to advance our understanding and designing of novel catalytic materials through in situ TEM characterization in a relative environment. This position collaborates with strong catalysis research groups, both internal scientists and U.C. Berkeley research groups.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform imaging using an environmental cell TEM primarily; use an ETEM through collaboration and other advanced TEM, as complementary.
Perform high quality TEM imaging & EELS (electron energy-loss spectroscopy) and data analysis at our world-renowned TEM facilities.
Develop understanding of nanoparticle catalysis based on TEM experiments on catalysts, working in real time and in a relative environment.
Collaborate with experts on catalytic materials synthesis and other characterizations.
Implement alternative and creative solutions to meet the goal of novel catalytic materials design for energy related applications.
May prepare research publications (both oral and written) on experimental results.
Communicate results and participate in professional activities, as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. (within the last three years) in Chemistry, Materials Science or other relevant discipline
Expertise in (S)TEM imaging and analysis
Knowledge of catalysis and fundamental materials science
Ability to communicate scientific results effectively, both oral and written
Independence and self-motivation
Desired:
Expertise in structural materials and surface science
Expertise in solution synthesis and characterization
Note: This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs. The approximate start date will be in October, 2010.
How to Apply: Please submit a single attachment that includes your resume or CV and cover letter stating your research background and interests.
