KIPP NYC is the family of KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) charter schools and related services in New York City, all dedicated to teaching students the academic and character skills necessary for success in high school, college, and beyond. Our NYC programs include four KIPP public middle schools (KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP, and KIPP Infinity), KIPP Academy Elementary School, KIPP NYC College Prep High School, and KIPP through College, a comprehensive advocacy program that supports the success of our alumni in their post-KIPP years. Our schools have been among the highest performing in their districts and throughout New York City. KIPP NYC serves over 2,100 KIPP students and alumni, employs 200 remarkably talented and fun professionals, and has a combined operating budget of nearly $30 million. The MD will report to the KIPP NYC Superintendent and manage the Director of Sharing. The MD will be responsible for building a long-term plan for Teaching and Learning including adding additional team members as appropriate.
This is a unique - and uniquely challenging - leadership opportunity to shape KIPP NYC's future as a high-performing, K-12 teaching and learning organization. Help us prove what is possible in urban schools.Responsibilities:
Learning Opportunities
* Create and coordinate professional development opportunities and plans for instructional leaders and teachers. Develop KIPP NYC-wide PD programming. Work with leadership to address the specific professional development needs of individual schools/programs.
* Lead professional development sessions as appropriate. Observe live or via video and provide feedback to drive continuous improvement.
* Support school leaders and teachers in setting professional development goals.
* Bring to KIPP NYC the best educators, resources, and materials in support of professional development. Create a library of materials and best practice tools for teachers.
* Partner with Teach for America, Teacher U, and other programs to ensure teachers take advantage of external learning opportunities.
* Work with principals to develop high-quality new teacher orientation and training.
Data and Assessment
* Assist Executive Director and principals in setting data-driven goals for each academic team and developing plans for achieving those goals.
* Promote development and continuous improvement of a data-driven instruction culture: an environment in which teachers value, and are trained in, the design and implementation of assessments, and the use of progress data to shape the delivery of instruction.
* Work with school leadership to implement systems and work processes to track student data and ensure its effective analysis and use.
* Ensure that common benchmark assessments are regularly administered in all schools and aligned from year-to-year.
* Create resources and provide professional development to help teachers prepare for the NYS content exams in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
* Analyze results from state pre-tests (ELA and math) and work with teachers to strategically target instruction and ensure that all students annually achieve at least one year of growth.Build and refine KIPP NYC quarterly assessments in Reading,
* Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Analyze results and support teachers in using data to inform instruction.
* Lead implementation of MAP testing. Support teachers in analyzing MAP data and identifying areas of strength and growth for students.
* Analyze and provide resources to school-based staff from report cards/progress reports (trends, watch lists, greatest improvements, etc.).
* Work with Data team to explore connection between character measures and academic performance.
Curriculum and Instruction
* Ensure the creation and maintenance of aligned scopes in all K-12 content areas.
* Partner with principals in designing individual development plans for all instructional staff outlining key areas of growth and next steps in the pursuit of great teaching.
* Provide leadership and support on cluster-wide curricular alignment when appropriate (scope and sequence; curricular templates; standards, benchmarks, grade-level equivalencies).
* Assist in the improvement of educational management systems such as lesson plans, instructional maps, observation tools, etc.
* Provide support on adoption of curricular programs within and across schools.
* Provide leadership on cluster-wide curricular foci (e.g. cluster-wide focus on literacy, critical reasoning, and writing across the curriculum).
* Provide leadership on creating and maintaining a common language around effective instructional practice.
* Ensure that schools are implementing high-quality special education services.
Sharing
* Ensure that materials are effectively disseminated using KIPP NYC's online platform (KIPP Share) and through more traditional means (binders, workbooks, etc.).
* Oversee further development of KIPP Share platform, in partnership with Director of Sharing and Director of Technology.
* Guide and support content area leaders, determining annual goals and structure for content area meetings.
* Connect teachers across schools who can learn from each other or would work well together.
Video
* Facilitate knowledge capture by developing systems for capturing, codifying, and sharing video across the network, including the creation of a video library of high-quality lessons.
* Help principals use video more frequently in their PD sessions.
Leadership
* Recruit, develop, and manage team capable of achieving Teaching and Learning goals.
* Serve as member of KIPP NYC's leadership team.Qualifications:
* Minimum three years experience in a school leadership role. Urban school experience preferred.
* Track record of outstanding success as a teacher
* Significant experience in implementing assessment systems (including benchmark assessments) and using data to drive academic results
* An analytical view of student progress towards standards
* Extreme flexibility to accommodate multiple priorities and a strong work ethic to accommodate high level of responsibilities
* Outstanding project management and organizational skills
