IT Technologist (SSP1/08N)Title: IT Technologist (SSP1/08N) Location: St. George (downtown Toronto) Other Locations: The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (DAA) and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (DI) rely on high-performance computing, mostly under the Linux environment, for public outreach, web presence, research and teaching. Under the supervision and direction of the Computing Facilities Manager, the incumbent junior level IT Technologist will be involved in all computing and networking operations. Typical duties include: configuring, troubleshooting and repairing Linux, Windows, and Macintosh computers and peripherals; installing and configuring software applications; testing software tools as appropriate; providing support to faculty, researchers, students and staff over the telephone, in-person or via email; network hardware and software installation and configuration; maintenance of a variety of servers; and preparing documentation; web page maintenance, maintaining and setting up audio-visual equipment, and other appropriate duties as required. The incumbent must be prepared to assist all level of users.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: University degree in the field of computer sciences or hardware, networking, and operating systems technologies, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: At least one year of demonstrated experience at a supporting position in an academic/research environment with Linux, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems. Experience in Linux systems administration is required. Web development experience is an asset. The incumbent should also have proven customer service experience.
Skills: Working knowledge of computer hardware including Macintosh and PC hardware and associated peripheral equipment; basic administrator's skills in Macintosh OS, MS Windows; intermediate level of administrator's skills in Linux operating systems; basic Web/HTML skills, including scripting; application software such as e-mail clients, Web browsers, MS Office or equivalent. Knowledge of astronomy application software and university data systems (AMS, ROSI, etc.) an asset.
Other: Strong commitment to high-quality service. Good communication skills (both verbal and written); must be able to communicate technical concepts effectively and patiently to both novice and sophisticated users. High degree of initiative and ability to work independently and within a team environment. Ability to learn new techniques and keep up-to-date in the field. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Flexibility: must be able to adapt quickly in a constant changing environment. Tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients. Good organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure environment. Good judgment.
Incumbent must be willing to work flexible hours when appropriate for system maintenance, upgrades, backup, and emergencies.
