Beaumont Unified Instructional Assistant I DEFINITION: Under immediate supervision, assists in conducting intensified, positive learning, experiences for students in assigned areas of study; performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for certified instructional personnel; assists students with special needs and performs other related work as required. Responsible to the site Principal, Administrative Designee or Director of Special Services. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class receive direct assignment, supervision and training from certified instructional personal, credentialed nurse and general orientation and training from the Principal through District programs. Incumbents assist instructional personnel in bringing stimulation, broadening and creative experiences to the learning process, to assist instructional personnel and bring positive, intensive and concentrated study and learning opportunities to individual students and to assist in creating a proper classroom or learning environment. The full responsibility for appropriate instruction, curriculum materials and evaluation resides with the instructional personnel. The general guideline is that the Instructional Assistant 1 will be working with the students. Incumbents may also be required to assist in lifting students, provide wheel chair attendant services for special needs students, assist when two persons are necessary for delivery of health services, supervise students who are mentally challenged, and other duties as assigned. May be assigned to participate as a screener in providing school site head checks for pediculosis under supervision of a credentialed school nurse. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Monitors and assist in administration of student testing and scores tests as directed. - Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities, in library and on field trips. - Assists in the development of a variety of instructional materials. - Performs a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials. - Maintains student records, attendance and files. - Operates a variety of instructional media, office machines and equipment. - Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher. - Maintains records of materials and equipment as directed. - Assists in analyzing, demonstration and explaining basic skills, knowledge and strategies informal sports and fundamentals of body movement. - Maintain a safe and appropriate learning environment. - Provide wheelchair attendant service for special needs students. - Supervise and assist mentally challenged students. - Assist in lifting of special needs students as needed. - Provides additional assistance for delivery of health services as needed. - Participates as a screener for pediculosis at school sites. - Participates in district in service programs. - Administer medications to students under direct supervision. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE: Knowledge of: - General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics. - Techniques used in controlling and motivating students. - English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar and math - Routine record keeping. - General purposes and goals of public education. - Specific subject area content as required in job assignment. - Safety rules and regulations regarding physical activity. - K-5 Curriculum standards in the area of computers. - Specific subject area content as required in job assignment. Ability to: - Assume responsibility for supervising students. - Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional setting. - Performs routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculation. - Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children. - Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. - Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public. Training and experience: - High School diploma or equivalent; Proof required if employed. Some paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational or child care setting; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. NOTE: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, law requires that para-professionals who assist in classroom instruction in Title I School-wide and Targeted Assistance Schools must meet at least one of the following requirements 1. Must have completed two years of higher education (60 semester units) or 2. Possess an Associate or higher degree, or 3. Pass a formal state or local academic assessment that demonstrates the knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing and mathematics, or reading, writing and mathematics readiness. - Incumbents are encouraged to participate in courses, seminars and workshops in the area of instructional services, psychology, guidance and First Aid/CPR training. Requirements: - Pass the District's adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score. - Provide proof of TB clearance at time of hiring. - High School diploma or equivalent.
