BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned; good knowledge of adolescent growth and development or, if applicable, adult learning theory; good knowledge of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCPS) curriculum and program of studies related to assignments and public school mission, goals, and organization; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with students, peers, and parents; skill in oral and written communications; excellent human relations skills. Must be eligible for Virginia Teaching Certification or licensure. BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK: Under general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator, plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades 9-12. Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities, as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and controls activities; performs related duties as required or assigned. Positions covered by this specification serve as general education classroom teachers in a high school (grades 9-12). Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level, are most of ten-subject oriented but may be skill or specialty oriented. Some positions work off site or in a combination of off site and classroom settings. Incumbents usually perform duties within a team or departmental setting, but might work independently in a unique teaching specialty. The responsibilities of teachers shall include, but not be limited to: 1. Work collaboratively with all stake holders in providing a world-class education 2. Continually assessing student achievement and maintaining appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. 3. Planning and implementing appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials, providing appropriate learning experiences, managing allotted learning time to maximize student achievement, and utilizing a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning. 4. Managing the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process, and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site. 5. Coordinating instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and nonschool-based, as required, maximizing learning opportunities. 6. Working in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or in field or may make off-school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors. 7. Participating in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned. 8. Fostering partnerships and ensuring continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress. 9. Continually communicating with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations. 10. Assigning work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers. 11. Serving at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant. 12. Supporting or participating in school wide student activities and social events. 13. As assigned or required, monitoring student behavior in non-instructional area and intervening to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrator as appropriate. 14. Collaborating with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school wide instructional or related activities as needed. 15. Complete other duties as assigned.
