Under the direction of the Assistant Dean & Director of Infrastructure Planning (IP), Office of the Dean, the Facilities Planner is responsible for all aspects of capital project planning for various projects and ensuring that Divisional research, teaching and administrative space meets the infrastructure requirements of the academic mission of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

The work includes the determination of specific physical requirements, scope, staging and feasibility for upgrades to existing facilities and/or new construction with the larger context of the Faculty's needs and resources, the requirements of various funding bodies, approvals processes and established University and Council of Ontario Universities (COU) space standards. Applying specialized architectural/engineering expertise, the Facilities Planner works with multiple stakeholders to plan and manage these projects. The Facilities Planner will provide technical details and professional advice relating to design, planning principles, user needs and architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural principles and trends (as relevant to professional architectural/engineering designation).

The incumbent works in a team environment with other Planners both in the unit and outside the unit and division, and participates in planning, organizing and managing priority projects, as directed by Assistant Dean (AD). In conjunction with the Assistant Dean and the IP team, the Facilities Planner will participate in setting the annual priorities for space planning to support the Division.

As a team member the Facilities Planner will participate in team problem-solving, communicating information related to best practices, seeking out advice from other team members, conveying relevant information to the team, and participating in team discussions. The Facilities Planner will manage and direct individual projects as well as provide assistance to other IP members on any aspect of their respective assigned capital/renovation projects. The position requires researching and writing planning and space assessment reports. The Facilities Planner will propose plans and budgets for potential renovation projects to units across Faculty of Arts & Science. Additionally the incumbent will regularly co-ordinate projects that may have a construction value up to $10 million. The Facilities Planner will be responsible for providing profession-related technical information and assistance to other Planners.
Minimum:

EDUCATION:
University degree in Architecture or Engineering, professional designation (license to practice) is required.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 7 years' experience with institutional projects and space design and planning. Experience working as an Architect and/or Engineer with exposure to working with small and large scale capital projects. Demonstrated knowledge and application of space analysis, functional planning, interior design practices and/or mechanical, electrical, structural design., Experience developing construction cost estimates and tracking project budgets.
Minimum 7 years experience participating in various aspects of construction projects; ability to create, read and interpret technical specifications and design drawings.
Knowledge of laboratory or other research and teaching environments would be asset.

SKILLS:
Demonstrated experience with, AutoCAD (current version),3D drawings and Microsoft office software, specifically Excel and Word at intermediate level. Experience in MS Project.
Highly developed and demonstrated analytical and communication skills (verbal and written). Above average report writing skills including conveyance of analytical results in easily understood terms.

OTHER:
Must have initiative and perseverance and be able to work independently with minimum supervision, and accept responsibility for meeting multiple deadlines.
Creativity, tact and superior problem solving abilities are essential.
Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
High level of accuracy required while working under pressure.
