EXTENSION COMMUNITY & ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP SPECIALIST - ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR
EXTENSION COMMUNITY & ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP SPECIALIST - ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR
Appointment Location and Program Relationships: This faculty position is a jointly sponsored Extension position by Iowa State University Extension and the University of Wisconsin Extension - Cooperative Extension. The position is a faculty position appointed within Iowa State University and will have an affiliation relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin Extension. This position is intended to serve shared needs related to community leadership development and Extension programs in both Iowa and Wisconsin. The position will be physically located in the City of Dubuque as part of a multi-specialist office created in partnership with ISU Extension, UW-Extension and the City of Dubuque.
Position Context and Primary Responsibilities: ISU Extension and UW-Extension have a strong history of community development related extension education. In that context there is a strong foundation of connecting applied research to community issues and using community-based education and extension outreach to help communities, community-based organizations, local governments and individuals build capacity to solve problems or address priority needs. Both Iowa and Wisconsin have identified community leadership development as a high priority need and have ongoing programs that address those needs. The target audiences of Extension leadership programs tend to be in the public sector in contrast to the business school model of corporate leadership development.
ISU Extension and UW-Extension variously employ state specialists, regional specialists or educators, and county-based educators to connect campus-based applied research and knowledge generation with applied educational needs in communities. A common leadership development mechanism is county or place-based leadership development programs involving a monthly curriculum over the course of a year to help people build individual and community leadership skills. Other leadership development programs are oriented towards communities of interest such as youth leadership development (Extension 4H programs), woodland owners, lake leaders, non-profit organizations, and local government officials.
This position is expected to address needs associated with leadership programming that include: establishing an ongoing process for identifying and evaluating "best practices" in leadership, strategic communication, and organizational development; conducting or supporting needs assessment and prioritization of applied research initiatives; conducting applied research and impact evaluation of leadership programs or initiatives, including program collaborations with local or regional Extension educators as appropriate; coordination of leadership program initiatives and concept development in partnership with extension educators and local community partners; supporting and conducting professional development for Extension educators and partners; participation in self-directed issue teams; supporting leadership collaborations within and across Iowa and Wisconsin; and contributing to reports and scholarly publications to advance the field of leadership development.
As a faculty member within an academic department at Iowa State University, this position will have a primary responsibility to interact professionally with departmental colleagues. As the University of Wisconsin-Extension is a sponsoring partner for 50% of the position, this position will also interact with professional peers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There is an opportunity and expectation that this position will interact with professional peers in the City of Dubuque and develop collaborative relationships with the City and it's institutions of higher education. Ph.D. required in a field related to leadership development, organizational development, community development, sociology, or strategic communications. Established record of publications in peer reviewed journals. Demonstrated experience working with communities, community organizations, and/or communities of interest related to leadership or organizational development. Ability to meet university standards for appointment to the rank of associate professor or above.
