The International Institute of New Jersey is a non-profit committed to the goal of helping people in transition from one society to another, especially those who have endured the ravages of war, persecution and economic hardship. We provide a range of services designed to help newcomers, their families, and communities to become self-sufficient contributing members of American society. The International Institute seeks two individuals to serve as part-time AmeriCorps members with clients to improve their English. Responsibilities: Instruct members of the Match Grant program in open enrollment ESL conversation/tutoring sessions. Prepare lesson plans for ESL sessions. Coordinate all materials and curriculum necessary. Perform any administrative duties required for those sessions, such as calling clients, creating flyers, recording attendance, completing client surveys, and montly reports. Communicate on a regular basis with Resettlement Directors and Director of ESL Program. Work closely with ESL instructor of IINJ class to assist any students who need extra help. Be an integral part of the ESL Program to assist with clients and the programs as necessary. Additional duties as assigned. Perform Community Outreach and Translate/Interpret as needed if fluent in a second language. Complete 1 citizenship project Skills and Qualifications: A self-motivated generalist trained in ESL willing to learn and take initiative when required. Interest in second language acquisition, ESL teaching, testing, and teacher education a plus. Be able to tutor multiple levels and to be flexible. Computer literacy (knowledge of Word and Excel). Must be people-oriented, pleasant, and energetic, with a good sense of humor. Must be comfortable working with a diverse group of people and appreciative of cultural differences. Additional Qualifications: College degree preferred and two references. Trained in ESL. Must be able to represent IINJ well. Needs to: be reliable, keep appointments with clients, commit to a regular schedule, have strong organizational skills and efficient time management, and attend AmeriCorps Training meetings bi-weekly on Friday afternoons. Be able to keep records and summarize data about number of students attending sessions. Must be culture-sensitive. Must be able to commit to 17-20 hours a week for one year. Ability to work with individuals and groups. Be pro-active and results orientated. Must show proof of permanent resident (green card or INS form I-5551), or US Citizenship.
