Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Facilities & Services, the Director, Sustainability Operations & Services is responsible for providing leadership and coordinating sustainability efforts with the goal of improving environmental performance. The Sustainability Office works to embed sustainability into the fabric of the St. George campus by linking research, teaching and institutional practices. Beyond outreach within the University community, the Director develops large conservation projects for the St. George Campus in areas such as energy management, water and recycling; oversees energy reduction initiatives and collaborates with Faculties in the promotion of projects aimed at reducing energy and water usage in buildings.
Using approaches that link technology, behaviour and design, the Sustainability Office works with students, staff and faculty to develop and support projects, policies and initiatives that reduce consumption of resources while enhancing social engagement and inclusion. It fosters partnerships among campus and external stakeholders and provides resources that lead to meaningful change.
The Director provides advice and expertise to planning and construction committees for construction and renovation projects, ensures that existing high standards are raised further in response to the ongoing development of "green" materials, products, systems and construction methods, reviews current construction/design standards, making recommendations for changes that will improve sustainability, and develops systems to track and measure success.
The Director actively promotes the University's sustainability initiatives through public presentations, participation at conferences, the production of promotional materials and contributions to trade and other publications. Other responsibilities include: initiating discussions with individuals and groups on campus to raise issues of sustainability and to encourage improvements; researching advances in the field, sourcing products and developing relationships with manufacturers; producing ad hoc and annual reports on all departmental activities; developing and managing operating and project budgets; managing staff.

EDUCATION: Degree in engineering; required. LEED certification and/or BOMA certification an asset. Knowledge of building operations and district energy systems.
EXPERIENCE: Extensive related experience in the field of building operations and project management involving a diversity of building types, preferably in a broader public sector environment. Experience in managing staff in a unionized environment.
SKILLS: Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence others to gain consensus. Negotiation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective presentations. Budget planning and management experience. Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills. Skill in developing cost benefit analyses and business cases.
Proficiency in standard office software applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
