Director of SMATE
About the Position:Western Washington University seeks a creative and collaborative Director for Science, Math, and Technology Education (SMATE). SMATE has established a history of leading and supporting systemic change in science and mathematics education locally and nationally. We are looking for a dynamic leader to support our current work and to guide us in new directions.
This is a 9-month academic year appointment as Director of SMATE with opportunities for summer salary. The salary will be commensurate with experience and will carry with it a tenured faculty appointment in the appropriate department. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Sciences and Technology.
About the Department:SMATE includes faculty members with split appointments between SMATE and departments in the College of Sciences and Technology or the Woodring College of Education. The 19,000 square foot SMATE facility includes four teaching laboratories and a 5,800 square foot learning resource center. The learning resource center serves WWU students as well as local K-12 teachers.
Mission of SMATE: Western Washington University prepares teachers to become leaders in their respective disciplines. The faculty and staff of SMATE strive to create national models for effective recruiting and preparation of the highest quality elementary and secondary mathematics and science teachers. We are active in research and dissemination of new knowledge in mathematics and science education to the university and K-12 communities. We also serve as a valuable resource to the university and broader community to improve mathematics and science teaching and learning. Position Responsibilities: * Collaborate with faculty from the College of Education and the College of Sciences and Technology to develop, plan, implement, and assess ambitious programs for the professional development of K-16 teachers of science and mathematics * Coordinate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education initiatives and grant related research * Represent SMATE at multiple venues locally, regionally, and nationally * Mentor SMATE faculty members. Evaluate tenure and promotion materials and provide feedback to home departments * Teach STEM education courses * Oversee operations and management of the SMATE facility, budget, curriculum, and staff Required Qualifications: * Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in a STEM or STEM education field * Scholarly record in STEM education * Success in securing grants to support STEM education projects * Administrative experience Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated experience in teacher preparation * Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to K-12 STEM education * Demonstrated experience in cross-disciplinary leadership and collaboration * Administrative experience at the University level * Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations Academic Emphasis:SMATE Job Location:Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
