The Sciences Research Computing environment consists of fourteen thousand processing cores, and more than three petabytes of high performance storage. With the five universities Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) set to open in 2013, this role will have an active involvement with the design and implementation of new resources to further increase support of our research.
The Director of Scientific Computing and Visualization will manage resources for scientific computing, scientific application development, informatics, visualization and high- performance computing, specific to the Sciences. Visualization is a growth area in HPC within the University and will continue to develop advanced capabilities and deploy new technology to support science.
Interacts directly with science faculty to assess needs, develop strategic plan, budget, and coordinate and facilitate the development and maintenance of the necessary hardware/software to support research programs. Will establish a continuum of support to underpin science by application of HPC systems and technology to support faculty research. Maintains close collaboration with the other FAS research computing groups and similar groups across the University.
Manages 8 staff members. Management responsibilities include building and developing a diverse and effective team; planning and delegating work effectively; communicating and monitoring performance expectations; motivating and developing direct reports; and ensuring compliance with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures.
Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree required . 10 years experience, with at least 5 years experience managing a large-scale research computing environment, including direct supervisory experience, is required.
Additional Qualifications A Ph.D. in the life or physical sciences with demonstrable computational skills and experience or a Ph.D. in computer science with prior experience in computational physical sciences is preferred. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills and prior research experience and demonstrated management skills. Superior communication and diplomatic skills with demonstrated leadership and the ability to collaborate at all levels of an organization are essential.
