The Director of Application Development provides overall team leadership and day-to-day direction for the MIS Department. Manages multiple applications and company-wide information systems and technology in support of business strategies and goals.
Responsibilities * Establishes operational objectives and priorities for delivery of information services functions. Accountable for the overall success of the MIS Department including meeting objectives. Maximizes the use of information technology in developing long-term strategic goals and near-term operating plans to guide information systems operations and development. * Analyzes metrics to develop dashboards that demonstrate development quality and application uptime in order for the team to meet SLA goals. * Regularly collaborates with management throughout the company to determine the needs of various offices and departments. * Develops and recommends IT strategies, policies, and procedures, and manages their successful implementation. Develops and maintains up-to-date technical documentation and software/hardware standards. * Screens, interviews and makes recommendations for hiring potential employees. Coaches and provides leadership, direction, motivation and supervision of direct reports. Appraises performance, provides performance feedback, takes corrective actions and oversees training and development of staff. * Determines the most cost effective model for enterprise-wide information systems by exploring and evaluating the options; providing value propositions, cost/benefit analysis and return on investment analysis; preparing appropriate budgets for specific areas of responsibility; and approving invoices and expenditures to support projects and initiatives. * Identifies, researches and evaluates new products/technologies to determine applicability and impact on existing systems and other departments. Prepares proposals, cost/benefit analyses and feasibility studies. Establishes expectations, guidelines and the processes required to effectively schedule installations. Monitors schedule and adjust resources as needed to meet changing demands. * Develops and manages relationships with IT vendors. Manages purchases and installation of new software and consulting services. * Facilitates the development, implementation, and refinement of methodology. Develops the scope and objectives of projects and prepares project plans. Manages projects as a team leader and responsible for completion of projects on time and within budget. * Provides advice, guidance, and assistance to senior management and subcontractors as appropriate. Works with management and project teams to ensure strategic directions are identified, addressed and implemented as well as to resolve and escalate issues in a timely manner.
Requirements * Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education. A master’s degree is preferred. * At least 12 years related IT experience including managing, integrating and coordinating information technology, with at least five years at a manager or director level. Must have proven experience with a variety of technologies in the areas of .Net, OO, Ajax, SOA, SOAP, WSDL, XML, HTML, JavaScript, Web Services. Experience in a professional services/ consulting firm is a plus. * Proven experience in solving complex problems for individuals or teams. * Efficiently utilize a personal computer and related software including Microsoft Office, internet proficiencies and related departmental software. * Experience in organizing and writing reports of a technical nature. Able to communicate results to all levels of employees with varying degrees of technical knowledge. Able to defend stance in a diplomatic manner while articlating vision, direction, requirements and priorities. Proven experience in solving complex problems for individuals or teams. Experience with analyzing and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of options and exercising critical thinking, problem solving, and judgment skills. * Proven track record of project completions. * Experience in supervising employees including assigning work, training employees, and conducting job performance reviews is preferred. Able to recruit, interview and hire new employees for the department. * Proven record of multi-tasking and ability to handle a high pressure environment with significant timeline pressures. * Past history of developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintaining them over time. * Able to enjoy the challenge of working with technology in a rapidly changing environment.
