The Director of the Intercultural Center and Dean of the Sophomore Class will provide leadership and coordination of all aspects of the Intercultural Center. As the Director of the Intercultural Center, they will have administrative and budgetary responsibility for the Center. The Director will provide advising, advocacy, and support for students and a broad range of student groups including, but not limited to, Enlace(Latino/a student organization),theNative American Student Association(NASA), theSwarthmore Asian Organization(SAO) and theSwarthmore Queer Union(SQU),DESHI(South Asian student organization),MULTI(multi-racial students),COLORS(queer students of color),theQueer-Straight Alliance(QSA), and White Students Confronting Director willserve on appropriate College and faculty committees and ensure strong ties between the Intercultural Center and the academic life of the College through planning and implementation of programming and collaborative initiatives that support and create a diverse and inclusive learning environment for all students.
The Director/Dean will be a member of the Dean’s senior staff and as Dean of the Sophomore Class will share other Dean’s Office responsibilities for all students, including academic and personal advising, being part of the emergency on call system, and assisting in the implementation of the student disciplinary system. In addition, the Dean of the Sophomore Class will work with the Dean of Students and other colleagues in the Dean’s Office to plan and implement programming efforts in support of both academic and overall success at the College, specifically for the sophomore class and broadly for all students.
Candidates for this position must have a bachelor’s degree; an advanced degree in an academic discipline is very strongly preferred. In addition, several years experience as a dean and in academic advising and personal development in a liberal arts College setting is preferred. An informed knowledge, including through academic study and/or cultural identity, of the varying groups affiliated with the Intercultural Center is highly desirable. We seek a candidate with excellent communication, mediation, programming, and consultative skills as well as a person with vision who understands and appreciates the intellectual, social, and political development of undergraduate students. Applicants for this position must be willing to live in Swarthmore or a contiguous community and be available for evening and weekend responsibilities and activities.
