Assistant or Associate Professor of Music Education
About the Position:Assistant / Associate Professor of Music Education - full-time, tenure track. Begins September 2012. The Music Department and the CFPA are committed to the University's strategic goal of recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and welcome all applicants.
About the Department:The College of Fine and Performing Arts is comprised of the departments of Theatre and Dance, Music and Art, housed in six buildings with five performance spaces, including a Performing Arts Center overlooking Bellingham Bay. The College also is home to the Western Gallery, which manages one of the top ten outdoor sculpture collections in the country.
The Department of Music offers BM, BA and MM degrees to approximately 190 majors. The faculty consists of 39 full and part time faculty. The department serves as a focal point for the campus and the regional community through collaboration, participation and leadership in music performance and instruction. Position Responsibilities: * Teach music education courses in area of expertise and as assigned * Coordinate Music Education program and shape its mission and vision * Recruit and advise prospective and current music education majors * Advise NAfME Collegiate Chapter * Administer and supervise field experiences for student practica and internships * Establish a strong relationship with the Woodring College of Education and serve on its advisory board and curriculum committee * Develop strong relationships with mentor teachers in area school districts and be a visible advocate for music education in the community, state, and region * Actively participate in state, regional and national music education professional associations * Actively participate in faculty governance and university service * May teach additional courses as appropriate to skill-set and departmental needs Required Qualifications: * Earned Doctorate in Music or Master's Degree in Music with equivalent professional experience * Evidence of successful teaching in public school at the elementary or secondary level * A strong record of scholarship/publication and/or creative endeavor Preferred Qualifications: * Evidence of successful interaction with music education specialists at the local and regional level * Experience with curriculum development and assessment * Evidence of successful university teaching experience * Experience in supervision of pre-service teachers * Strong communication and interpersonal skills * Participation in professional music education associations * Experience with mentoring and academic advising at the college level * A record of service to public school music programs and participation in music advocacy * Knowledge and application of state and national standards, and current WA state certification requirements for elementary and secondary level music teachers Academic Emphasis:Music Education Job Location:Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
