Assistant Director of Human Resources
The Assistant Director of Human Resources (HR) will ensure that Mastery HR supports an employee-focused, high performance, outcomes driven organizational culture. The Assistant Director of HR is responsible for managing HR process such as benefits, certification, compliance, on-boarding and off-boarding employees, and payroll. S/he works with school-based leadership staff to address employee needs, manage personnel issues, and implement a performance-based compensation system. The Assistant Director of HR is outcomes driven, organized, customer friendly and committed to the Mastery mission. S/he will report to the Director of Human Resources.

Mastery currently operates five elementary schools and five middle and high schools in Philadelphia serving 6,900 students in grades K through 12. Mastery intends to open additional campuses, and the long-term goal of the organization is to influence the larger education system by operating multiple small urban middle/high schools that demonstrate how students can excel to meet the highest standards of high school education in America.

Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Human Resources will be responsible for the following:
* Implementing and managing a performance management compensation system, including norming of school leaders, training, and supporting principals in making year-end compensation and contract renewal decisions
* Managing employee personnel and performance issues as they arise at Mastery schools, including investigating employee complaints or concerns
* Coordinating and managing employee benefits, including managing outside subcontractors, and researching robust, yet cost-effective benefit options
* Executing and analyzing survey and retention data developing recommendations for improvements to senior leadership
* Establishing management practices that support positive employer-employee relationships and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation
* Ensuring Mastery’s compliance with local, state and federal labor and human relations laws
* Ensuring Mastery’s compliance with state certification requirements and with Highly Qualified Teacher regulation
* Developing partnerships with universities and colleges in order to provide affordable certification program options for Mastery staff
* Creating and managing staff contracts and offer letters
* Developing the Human Resources department through researching and implementing best practice policies and procedures

Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) and 5-7 years of relevant HR or management experience
* Broad knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organization development, employee relations, and/or training and development
* Solid oral and written communication skills
* Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
* Demonstrated ability to lead and develop staff members
* Excellent organizational skills
* Ability to multi-task and manage complex projects
* Experience in urban schools or other education a plus
* Entrepreneurial zeal and a sense of humor
