Responsibilities include: serving as the primary or secondary academic adviser for graduate students in the Secondary Field Program in CSE and planned Master's Degree programs; advising students who wish to apply for these programs; reviewing proposed Plans of Study and other materials submitted by applicants; identifying and coordinating placements for research opportunities and internships; assisting students in developing proposals for independent research projects; providing academic supervision of these projects as necessary; supervising completion of each student's Plan of Study, monitoring student progress and working with the SEAS Student Affairs Office to document completion of requirements for the Secondary Field Program and planned Master's; and assisting in career planning and placement for students in the program. In addition, the Assistant Director will work with Academic Computing to develop and manage a program of computational skills training in support of Computational Science and Engineering courses. The Assistant Director will play a key role in planning the new programs and will assist with developing additional aspects of the industrial relationships of the Institute for Applied Computational Science, developing new courses, seminars and short courses, developing virtual community tools for peer instruction and knowledge sharing, and assessing the effectiveness of courses in achieving learning outcomes. The position may include an unpaid lectureship in the individual's area of computational expertise. Basic Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or another field of science or engineering, with demonstrated research excellence in computational methods and approaches; the motivation to work with diverse stakeholders to build and maintain relationships with industrial and National Laboratory partners and develop the computational science community at Harvard; the documented ability to mentor graduate students; excellent communication skills; and a strong commitment to education and mentoring, including experience with advising and course/program development. The ideal candidate will have experience in software engineering, analysis, modeling or simulation in a non-academic setting.
