Our National Security Global Business is currently seeking an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial Analytical Laboratory Researcher. This position is located out of the Battelle Eastern Science and Technology Center (BEST Center) in Aberdeen, Maryland.
The selected candidate will travel to and work at various locations, including secure U.S. government facilities and Formerly Used Defense Sites, throughout the US. Primary job responsibilities include the following:
· Support routine and non-routine laboratory procedures and analyses efficiently and in allotted time frames
· Design and execute field sampling and monitoring plans, including authoring Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
· Read, comprehend and adhere to rigorous quality and safety guidelines for chemical and materials handling, instrument operation, and maintenance and treatment of data
· Perform analytical chemistry and air monitoring tasks in laboratory AND field settings, including: sample preparation, instrument operation, data acquisition, data reduction, and relevant calculations
· Perform aspects of instrument operation including calibration, routine maintenance and upgrades, troubleshooting, and documentation
· Make full and appropriate use of Laboratory Information Management System including maintaining documentation to support sample analysis and key accountability
· Researching, understanding and complying with environmental regulatory requirements.
· Author documentation including project requirements, test plans, test reports, presentations etc. The ability to write clearly and effectively is a must
· Interface with clients and project team members in a professional manner
· Inspect, test, and maintain documentation for laboratory safety equipment
Candidates with experience in these areas are preferred.
Extensive (³75%) travel to various CONUS locations for business related purposes and off-site training is expected. Temporary assignments may last from days to months.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION
o Work schedules may vary, including being assigned to 12-hour rotating shifts on days, nights, weekends, and holidays in support of a plant that operates 24 hrs per day 7 days per week. Overtime and shift-differential pay will be provided for such assignments.
o Incumbent must be able to complete successfully required training exercises, including training for the Analytical Laboratory's Certification Level 1 (Data Analyst) within six months after the date of appointment and will not be allowed to work unsupervised until certification requirements have been met.
o Battelle enforces a safety culture whereby all employees have the responsibility for continuously developing and maintaining a safe working environment. Each incumbent is responsible for completing all training requirements and fulfilling self-aid/buddy-aid responsibilities, participating in emergency response tasks as requested, and serving on safety committees and teams as requested. In addition, the incumbent must accept the responsibility for maintaining the safety of themselves and others by adhering to all written and verbal instructions, promptly reporting and/or correcting all hazards or unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to site leads and management on all safety issues.
o Incumbent must read, understand and comply with the general and specific operational, safety, and environmental requirements of all plans, procedures, and policies pertaining to this job and if requested, sign a statement acknowledging completion of this job requirement and their acceptance of the requirement to perform all procedure steps without deviation.
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
o Bachelor's Degree in a Physical Science or Engineering, with at least two semesters of college chemistry and a minimum of one year of chemical laboratory experience or environmental field work.
o Experience handling chemicals and familiarity with computers.
o Incumbent must be a U.S. citizen, will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to be placed in a Public Trust position. Must maintain a drug free work place, participate in annual and random urine testing, and periodic blood tests for cholinesterase level.
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
o Bachelor of Science or higher level degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering
o 2-years hands-on experience operating GC instruments using FID and FPD detectors.
o 1-year experience with mass spectrometry.
o Knowledge of Agilent's ChemStation software.
o Prior experience using LIMS.
