Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: February 9, 2013 This requisition will remain open until filled Departmental Overview The Berkeley International Office functions to ensure that all visiting international students and scholars have successful academic and personal experiences during their stay at UC-Berkeley. We provide advising on matters related to a wide array of federal regulations, academic procedures, personal adjustment, and career development. We also support a wide array of academic units through visa processing for students, scholars, staff, and faculty. In general, the incumbent is responsible for providing support for scholars who come to the University of California, Berkeley on a J-1 visa. This is a full time, career position that reports to the lead Scholar Adviser. Responsibilities J-1 Scholar Support Services: -Use knowledge of U.S. Immigration policies and University policies and procedures to analyze and evaluate data related to DS-2019 requests from University academic departments and associated units -Assess J-1 scholar's eligibility to apply for J-1 immigration status, analyze funding sources, prior employment status, and evaluate completeness of the application -Interact with University departmental administrators as J-1 scholar liaison for information about U.S. immigration policies and University policies/procedures for J-1 scholars -Assist with training University departmental administrators in various aspects of the J-1 visa document production process -Identify University departmental staff who are new or need retraining; coordinate and schedule special small training workshops designed to meet the needs of the particular groups -Participate in the planning and implementation of campus-wide training workshops -Develop, design, edit and review all related training materials and visual aids, as well as maintain informational flyers and visa document packet inserts for J-1 scholars and University departmental staff -Manage current database tables (i.e., fsa Atlas, etc.) and International Scholar Support Listserv information for all University departmental support staff (often with a high turnover rate); contact new University staff members or University department managers for updated staff information; refer new University departmental staff to small training workshops -Coordinate with the front-line supervisor and the J-1 Scholar Adviser to determine and allocate work assignments for other support staff including students -Coordinate with the front-line supervisor to maintain scholar hard copy filing system - Review for accuracy all Visiting Scholar DS-2019 forms before distribution to campus units. Systems Management Assistant: -In conjunction with the SEVIS Coordinator and the Lead J Scholar Advisor, manage SEVIS validation and amendments for all initial J scholar records; involving management of complex system which responds to reports from both campus departments and scholars regarding the date of their arrival -Manage moderated listserv for University departmental support staff serving international scholars -Track workload statistics Front-line Client Service: -Evaluate and provide accurate and detailed information and recommendations at the counter, on the phone, and via email to a variety of different clients -Use knowledge of complex U.S. immigration regulations, University policies and procedures, and local community resources to serve the needs of the diverse Berkeley International Office clientele Required Qualifications -Must be able to carry out the duties/responsibilities of being an ARO -Basic understanding of immigration procedures and regulations -Experience working in a multi-cultural customer service environment -Excellent interpersonal and written / oral communication skills -Ability to analyze and understand policies and data -Ability to work with diverse groups in a busy environment -Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities and complete tasks within time limits -Experience researching and resolving problems -Proven follow through on projects and assignments with minimal direction -Experience working independently and as a member of a team -Strong skills in Word, Eudora, and Excel, Powerpoint, and database systems Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related field Knowledge of campus policies and processes, experience working with international clients Salary & Benefits Annual Salary: $41,448 - 44,364 For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit: to Apply Please submit your cover letter and resume as a single attachment when applying.
